Bulawan Floating Restaurant on Good Friday

We’ve been to Bulawan before. The last time, Speedy and I had lunch there on a weekday, on a whim, and the experience was just so relaxing and peaceful, and the food so good that, right there and then, I decided I’d write a story. The story was published as a feature article in Manila Standard Today and I was so happy to give Bulawan the exposure that it so deserved. Strangely enough, we wouldn’t go back to Bulawan for six and a half years. It’s the distance. The town of Pililia is not exactly a stone’s throw away from Antipolo.

Yesterday, however, we finally returned to Bulawan. The food was as good as it was the last time we were there. And the ambience was just as laid-back and unhurried. We love it there.

On previous visits, we just ate. But, yesterday, Sam did some fishing. Because you can’t hurry the fish, Speedy and I knew that we had the time to luxuriate in the surroundings, take in the view, enjoy the spaciousness of the place and linger over our meal.

It started with a coconut.

Then, there was our meal. A very late lunch, really. I realize that the lighting wasn’t ideal for taking food photos but we chose this table because it was right beside the fish pond. Sam wanted to fish.

Pinakbet was the best vegetable dish we could manage to order for vegetarian Sam. We asked that all meat be removed.

And grilled liempo (pork belly) for Speedy and myself. It is a family tradition to eat pork on Good Friday. Sam may have gone vegetarian but Speedy, Alex (she stayed home yesterday) and I still observe the tradition.

Oh, yes, we finished everything. We were so full that we didn’t bother ordering dessert. But Sam resumed her fishing after our meal, she was having such a great time so we didn’t hurry her. We lounged for half an hour, chatting and taking photos, before we finally gave in.

Speedy and I ordered a glass of halo-halo that we shared. And then that was it. We really couldn’t eat anything else after that.

The bill? Including Sam’s fish bait, a little over PhP700.00.

We’re not going to wait another six and a half years to go back to Bulawan. We’re going back soon. Very soon.
